India's Aerospace Ambitions Take Flight as Rafale Deal Unfolds
India's aerospace industry is on the cusp of a major breakthrough, as Safran and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) engage in talks to produce the Rafale's M88 turbofan engines in India. This development has far-reaching implications for the country's aerospace ambitions, as it marks a significant step forward in establishing a domestic production capability for one of the fighter's most critical systems.
The proposed acquisition of 114 Rafale fighter aircraft has already sparked excitement in the Indian aerospace industry, with plans to manufacture 96 of the aircraft in India. The timing is also important because India is simultaneously pursuing higher-thrust propulsion technology for the AMCA and other future combat aircraft. Safran has previously discussed cooperation with HAL on high-thrust military engines, while India's broader fighter ecosystem is increasingly seeking greater domestic control over propulsion technology.
