India's Aerospace Ambition: Unlocking Global Opportunities for MSMEs

India's aerospace sector is on the cusp of a significant transformation, with the government and industry stakeholders working together to unlock global opportunities for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). The sector has witnessed a surge in demand, with Indian airlines placing orders for over 1,600 aircraft. This has caught the attention of global players, with Boeing India sourcing products and services worth nearly ₹14,000 crore annually from Indian suppliers.

One of the key areas of focus is empowering MSMEs to become global suppliers. The government is committed to supporting these enterprises, and various initiatives are underway to promote their growth. For instance, the Civil Aviation Ministry has partnered with industry body CII to organize conferences and workshops to facilitate interaction between MSMEs and global aerospace players.

Boeing India, which has around 300 suppliers in India, has already made significant strides in this direction. Out of these suppliers, 25 per cent are MSMEs, and the company is working to increase this number. The company's President, Salil Gupte, emphasized the need for Indian entities to manufacture complete assemblies and complex systems, as well as develop intellectual properties. This, he said, would not only enhance India's capabilities but also create new opportunities for exports.

The government is also working to create a conducive environment for MSMEs to grow. The Civil Aviation Secretary, Samir Kumar Sinha, said that various models for manufacturing aircraft in India are being looked at. This includes the development of airport equipment, which can be designed, certified, and manufactured in India and then exported.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) Chairman, Vipin Kumar, also highlighted the importance of skilling activities for MSMEs. He said that AAI airports can be the ground for innovations, and efforts should be made to design, certify, and manufacture airport equipment in India.

The government's efforts are yielding results, with Indian suppliers already making a mark in the global aerospace supply chain. However, there is still a long way to go. India needs to move beyond component assembly to designing, certifying, and manufacturing components. This requires significant investments in research and development, as well as infrastructure development.

The government is aware of the challenges and is working to address them. The Civil Aviation Minister, K Rammohan Naidu, emphasized the need for Indian entities to design, certify, and manufacture components. He said that India cannot be just a place for assembling aerospace components but a place for designing, certifying, and manufacturing components.

The stage is set for India to become a major player in the global aerospace market. With the government's support and industry stakeholders working together, India can unlock global opportunities for MSMEs and take its rightful place among the world's leading aerospace nations. The future looks bright, and with the right investments and support, India can achieve its aerospace ambitions.
