Explore CNC Systems →India's 5th Gen Jet AMCA: A Paradigm Shift in Software Development\n\nThe Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) is at the forefront of India's ambitious 5th generation fighter aircraft project, the AMCA. While the ADA retains design authority and develops critical flight control software, including Fly-By-Wire and other essential software stack, the program is shifting focus to core software development.\n\nThis shift is largely driven by the need to fast-track the development of the AMCA, which is expected to be the most software-intensive jet ever developed in India. The ADA is looking to outsource non-essential tasks, such as mission planning data software and electronic warfare components, to private sector companies.\n\nThese companies are leveraging massive engineering services for software verification and digital engineering solutions to support the development of the AMCA. The use of private sector companies is not only expected to speed up the development process but also bring in expertise and resources that the ADA may not have in-house.\n\nThe AMCA's software development is expected to be a complex task, with the aircraft requiring millions of lines of code to operate. The ADA is using programming languages such as C and C++ to develop mission-critical and flight-control software, as well as for sensor data fusion, radar processing, electronic warfare suites, and cockpit multi-function displays.\n\nThe first two AMCA prototypes are expected to be loaded with sensors to record data, which will then be processed using software to provide insights to engineers and pilots. This will enable them to identify what is working and what is not working in the shortest possible time, rather than spending weeks analyzing data.\n\nThe government has shortlisted three primary industrial heavyweights for the special purpose vehicle (SPV) consortium that is being led by Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL), L&T, and Bharat Forge. At least two of these companies already have their own software development arms and are working with the ADA on various assignments.\n\nAs the AMCA program progresses, outsourcing is expected to increase, with the ADA relying on private sector companies to provide software development services. This shift in approach is expected to bring in expertise and resources that will help to fast-track the development of the AMCA.\n\nIn conclusion, the AMCA program is undergoing a significant shift in its approach to software development, with the ADA outsourcing non-essential tasks to private sector companies. This shift is expected to bring in expertise and resources that will help to fast-track the development of the AMCA, making it the most software-intensive jet ever developed in India.
