Indian Startup Revolutionizes Rural Connectivity with 5G-Powered HAPS

The Ericsson Innovation Challenge has named Okulo Aerospace as one of its winners, partnering with TiE Delhi-NCR and IAN Group. This Indian startup has been working on a 5G-powered High Altitude Pseudo Satellite (HAPS) solution to tackle the critical societal challenge of rural connectivity.

According to the United Nations, over 500 million Indians still lack access to the internet. Ground-based telecom towers can only reach up to 3.5 to 10 km, and the signal weakens at the edges. The aftermath of the Tripura floods in 2021 highlighted the issue, with telecom recovery delayed by five days.

Okulo Aerospace's answer to this problem is a solar-powered aircraft flying at 20 km altitude, acting as an aerial tower. This HAPS operates alongside ground and satellite networks, providing 3,800 km² of direct-to-phone 5G coverage with under 10 ms latency.

The startup has already certified and flown flight-proven hardware, including India's first Directorate General of Civil Aviation – India Type Certified solar-electric UAV, SUV I, and the military VTOL, HINET, built under the Directorate of Public Relations, Ministry of Defence, India's iDEX program.

Okulo Aerospace is now seeking partners to run a 5G-enabled HAPS pilot in an underserved rural corridor. Telecom operators, public-sector partners, and collaborators can write to [email protected] to join this innovative project.

The Ericsson Innovation Challenge was designed to back 5G-powered technologies tackling critical societal challenges. Okulo Aerospace's HAPS solution has the potential to revolutionize rural connectivity in India, bringing the benefits of 5G to millions of people.

As the Indian government continues to prioritize digital inclusion, startups like Okulo Aerospace are playing a crucial role in driving innovation and finding solutions to complex problems. The success of this project will not only improve rural connectivity but also create new opportunities for economic growth and development.

In conclusion, Okulo Aerospace's 5G-powered HAPS solution is a game-changer for rural connectivity in India, and its potential impact cannot be overstated.
