Indian Navy Takes a Leap Forward in Naval Decoy Technology with JSR Dynamics' MGLD-N

In a significant development for the Indian Navy, JSR Dynamics, a homegrown defence company, has successfully secured a contract under the Indian Navy's iDEX Open Challenge to develop a naval variant of its Miniature Ground Launched Decoy (MGLD-N). The company, founded by ex-Indian Air Force Vice Chief Air Marshal Shirish Baban Deo (Retd.), has been working tirelessly to adapt the MGLD-N system for use in compact canisters launched from warships.

The MGLD-N system boasts two primary mission configurations: electronic deception and strike roles. In its electronic deception configuration, the system employs an active radar emulator and electronic-warfare jammer to mimic the radar cross-section of a larger aircraft, potentially wasting an opponent's fighter in attempting to identify the target. This capability can be particularly effective in confusing an opponent's air-defence system.

Design and Capabilities of the MGLD-N

The MGLD-N system features a unique design that allows it to be launched from a compact box-shaped canister, eliminating the need for a conventional runway. This configuration offers naval vessels the opportunity to deploy expendable aerial assets from limited deck-space, increasing their operational flexibility. The system is powered by twin solid rocket boosters for rocket-assisted take-off, followed by a sustainer turbojet engine for powered cruise.

The MGLD-N system has impressive specifications, including a range of approximately 1,650 km, three hours' endurance, and a cruise speed of Mach 0.6. The system weighs approximately 400 kg and measures 4.29 metres in length and 2.86 metres in wingspan.

Strike Configuration and Modular Design

In its strike configuration, the MGLD-N system offers the option to replace the internal fuel tanks with a 125 kg high-explosive warhead, reducing the stand-off range. However, this modular design allows for flexibility and adaptability, making the system an attractive option for naval vessels.

Implications for the Indian Navy

The development of the MGLD-N system by JSR Dynamics is a significant milestone for the Indian Navy, as it offers a range of benefits, including increased operational flexibility, enhanced electronic warfare capabilities, and the potential to deploy expendable aerial assets from limited deck-space. The system's range and endurance also make it an attractive option for naval vessels operating in the Indian Ocean Region.
