Indian Defence Exports Gain Momentum with Bharat Dynamics Limited's Success

Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) has been at the forefront of India's defence exports, with a significant surge in inquiries for its Akash Missiles and Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGMs). The company's Annual Report highlights the encouraging responses from overseas customers, driven by proven reliability, competitive pricing, and indigenous technological strengths.

The Akash Air Defence System has garnered attention from several countries, particularly those seeking to bolster their air defence capabilities. Its stellar performance in Operation Sindoor, where it successfully intercepted Pakistani Fatah-II missiles and multiple drones, has cemented its reputation as a reliable and effective system. American and European manufacturers are facing pressure due to multiple wars, depleting inventories and struggling production lines, making the Akash System an attractive option for countries seeking to upgrade their air defence capabilities.

BDL is also receiving queries for its submarine-fired decoys, anti-submarine countermeasures, and specialized naval mines. The company's Lightweight Torpedoes have been exported, and it is in talks with several countries for Heavyweight Torpedoes (Varunastra) that can be ship-launched. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is working on developing a submarine-launched variant that can hit underwater and above-water targets at 50 km.

The company has developed its in-house Amogha-III, a third-generation, fire-and-forget ATGM that has cleared all internal trials. The missile has a fire-and-forget capability, requiring no external intervention after launch. Once locked on, the missile navigates to its target entirely on its own. BDL is looking forward to user trials of the weapon system by the Indian Army.

BDL's export turnover for FY 2025-26 stood at ₹702.23 crore, with the company in touch with Indian Embassies, Defence Attachés, and channel partners across multiple geographies to enhance market access and customer engagement. Armenia has procured ATGMs from BDL in the last few years and has also imported the Akash Weapon System from India.

The growing overseas interest in Indian defence products is a sign that the country's defence industry is slowly moving beyond the domestic market and gaining credibility with foreign customers. BDL's success is a testament to the company's commitment to innovation, quality, and customer satisfaction. As the company continues to expand its global footprint, it is poised to play a significant role in shaping the future of defence exports.
