Terrorists Sentenced in 'Voice of Hind' Conspiracy Case

A special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court has handed down sentences ranging from five to six years to four operatives of the proscribed terrorist organisation Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in connection with the 'Voice of Hind' terror conspiracy case.

The convicts, Umar Nisar alias Qasim Khurasani, Rameez Ahmad Lone, Tanveer Ahmad Bhat, and Afshan Parvaiz Jarabi, were found guilty of various offences under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Indian Penal Code. These charges include criminal conspiracy, dissemination and propagation of ISIS material, radicalisation and recruitment of youth, and furthering the activities of the proscribed terrorist organisation.

According to the NIA, the case revolves around a conspiracy hatched by ISIS to radicalise and recruit impressionable youth in India to wage violent jihad against the Indian State. The terrorist organisation used online platforms, including pseudo identities, to disseminate ISIS-related propaganda. This was supplemented by on-ground terror financing activities, further solidifying the network's reach.

• The investigation revealed the involvement of cyber entities and their associates in content creation, editing, publication, and dissemination of the India-centric ISIS propaganda magazine 'Sawt-al-Hind (Voice of Hind)' through online platforms.

The court found the specific involvement of the four convicts in furthering the activities of ISIS. Umar Nisar was found to be involved in disseminating and propagating ISIS material through the 'Voice of Hind' magazine and Telegram, as well as other online channels, for radicalising and recruiting youth. Rameez Ahmad Lone and Tanveer Ahmad Bhat were found to be involved in preaching ISIS ideology and radicalising and recruiting youth for the purpose of joining ISIS. Afshan Parvaiz Jarabi was found to be involved in publishing and disseminating articles for the 'Voice of Hind' magazine through Telegram channels and in propagating ISIS ideology and inviting youth to join ISIS.

The NIA filed chargesheets against a total of eight accused persons, with the investigation establishing the involvement of the accused persons in the activities of the ISIS 'Voice of Hind' module and their role in furthering the objectives of the proscribed terrorist organisation through online activities. The trial against the remaining accused persons is continuing.
