Indian Army's Long-Range Loiter Munition Project: A Speed Conundrum\n\nThe Indian Army's 1,000-km Long Range Loiter Munition (LRLM) project has hit a significant roadblock. The project's primary objective is to create an entire ecosystem for the operation of long-range, one-way attack drones equipped with AI for targeting at such long ranges. However, the speed requirements set by the Indian Army, while desired, may keep many Indian-made LRLMs out of the process if speed limits are not lowered.\n\nAccording to the project's specifications, the Army is seeking a platform that can carry a 25 kg warhead for a 50-metre killing radius, fly at above 5,000 m, and achieve speeds of at least 400 km per hour. The LRLM programme aims to bridge the gap between the Army's requirements and the capabilities of existing LRLMs.\n\nMost Indian-made LRLMs have a maximum speed of 200-322 kmph, which falls short of the Army's requirements. Some LRLMs can travel at 400 kmph, but they lack the mandated range of 1,000 km. The speed limitations are attributed to the propulsion systems used in these LRLMs, which are typically powered by piston-propeller or electric motor-propeller. These systems have a speed limit of around 120-200 kmph.\n\nHowever, some companies are working on microjet-powered LRLMs, which may bridge the gap between the Army's requirements and the capabilities of existing LRLMs. These microjet-powered LRLMs can achieve speeds of 450-650 kmph, making them a potential solution to the speed conundrum.\n\nThe development of microjet-powered LRLMs is still in its infancy, and several challenges need to be addressed before they can be widely adopted. The Army's requirements for the LRLM project are stringent, and any solution must meet these requirements to be considered viable.\n\nThe Indian Army's LRLM project is a complex and challenging endeavour. The speed conundrum is just one of the many hurdles that need to be overcome before the project can be successfully completed. The Army's requirements for the LRLM project are clear, and any solution must meet these requirements to be considered viable.\n\nIn conclusion, the Indian Army's LRLM project faces significant speed hurdles. The project's future remains uncertain due to these speed limitations, and it is essential to address these challenges to ensure the project's success.
