India and Kazakhstan Forge Military Ties through Joint Exercise Kazind 2026

In a significant display of military cooperation, the Indian Army and the Armed Forces of Kazakhstan have kicked off the ninth edition of their joint training exercise, Kazind 2026, in the picturesque city of Oskemen, Kazakhstan. The exercise, which will run until October 11, aims to sharpen the combat skills of both forces, enhance their interoperability, and strengthen their operational preparedness in the face of emerging security challenges.

The joint training exercise, which began with an opening ceremony presided over by Major General Zhenis Maralov, Chief of Regional Command East of the Armed Forces of Kazakhstan, marks a significant milestone in the bilateral military cooperation between India and Kazakhstan. The exercise is being conducted at the Akhmirovo Training Area, where troops from both sides are engaging in a range of activities, including tactical navigation, live-firing drills, and combined combat exercises.

The Indian contingent, comprising 60 personnel from the Garhwal Rifles, along with troops from other arms and services, and personnel from the Indian Air Force, has been participating in the exercise since September 28. The Kazakhstan Armed Forces are fielding a matching contingent of 60 personnel, primarily from its Land Forces.

The joint training exercise is designed to foster the exchange of best practices and further strengthen military cooperation between India and Kazakhstan. The exercise will focus on joint tactical operations in semi-urban and mountainous terrain, including Special Heliborne Operations, Air mobility, and the integrated employment of Unmanned Aerial Systems and Counter-UAS capabilities.

The exercise is also aimed at enhancing the interoperability and joint capabilities of both forces to undertake counter-terrorism operations in a sub-conventional environment under a United Nations mandate. The training will help both sides to develop a better understanding of each other's tactics, procedures, and doctrines, ultimately leading to a more effective and coordinated response to emerging security challenges.
