Indian Air Force Completes Original Tejas Mk-1 Order, Awaits Upgraded Mk-1A Fighters

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is set to receive the final two Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas Mk-1 twin-seat trainers from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) on September 18. This milestone marks the completion of the original 40-aircraft Mk-1 order, which was placed in two phases over a decade ago.

The IAF's order for the Tejas Mk-1 included 40 aircraft, comprising 16 fighters in the Initial Operational Clearance (IOC) configuration, 16 fighters in the Final Operational Clearance (FOC) configuration, and eight twin-seat trainers. The last two trainers are being handed over in the FOC configuration, which is a significant upgrade over the IOC configuration.

The FOC contract was signed in December 2010, with an expected completion date of 2016. However, the delivery schedule was delayed due to various reasons, including the availability of the GE Aerospace F404-IN20 engines. The IAF signed a contract with HAL in February 2021 for 83 Mk-1A fighters, which includes 73 single-seat fighters and 10 twin-seat trainers.

The primary reason for the delay in the Mk-1A program is the ramp-up of engine production by GE Aerospace. The company has been working to increase deliveries of the F404-IN20 engines, which are critical for the Tejas Mk-1A program. HAL has also been stepping up production of the aircraft, and the handover of the final two trainers is a significant step forward for the IAF.

The completion of the original 40-aircraft order is a significant milestone for the IAF, but the bigger test for HAL will be to utilize its growing production capacity to start regular deliveries of the Mk-1As. The IAF is eagerly awaiting the first upgraded Tejas Mk-1A fighter, which will provide a significant boost to its combat capabilities.

The Tejas Mk-1A is a significant upgrade over the Mk-1, with advanced avionics, radar systems, and other features that will enhance the IAF's combat capabilities. The aircraft is designed to operate in a variety of roles, including air-to-air combat, air-to-ground strikes, and reconnaissance missions.

The IAF's order for the Tejas Mk-1A is a significant step forward for the Indian defense industry, which has been working to develop a domestic fighter aircraft program. The Tejas Mk-1A is a critical component of this program, and its successful development and production will have a significant impact on the IAF's combat capabilities.

In conclusion, the completion of the original 40-aircraft order is a significant milestone for the IAF, but the bigger test for HAL will be to utilize its growing production capacity to start regular deliveries of the Mk-1As. The IAF is eagerly awaiting the first upgraded Tejas Mk-1A fighter, which will provide a significant boost to its combat capabilities.
