India Takes a Giant Leap in Quantum-Secure Communication with 5.56-km QKD Link\n\nIn a significant breakthrough, India has successfully demonstrated a 5.56-km free-space Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) link, marking a major milestone in the country's quest for quantum-secure communication. The field trial, conducted by QNu Labs, Bhaskaracharya National Institute for Space Applications and Geo-informatics (BISAG-N), and Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IIT Gandhinagar), achieved a stable Quantum Bit Error Rate below 5% and generated secure keys at a rate of 230-260 bps.\n\nThis achievement integrates hardware-based QKD with software-based post-quantum cryptography, ensuring resilience and paving the way for longer-distance quantum-secure networks and satellite-based communication. The demonstration combined two complementary layers of quantum security: QNu Labs' hardware-based QKD device Armos over free-space optical channels and BISAG-N's Vedic Kavach software-based post-quantum cryptography with quantum random number generation.\n\nThe integration of Vedic Kavach with QNu Labs' QKD technology marks a significant step towards practical quantum-resilient communication systems. Dr. Vinay Thakur, Director General, BISAG-N, stated that this achievement is a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation in advancing India's capabilities in secure communication infrastructure.\n\nSunil Gupta, Co-founder and CEO, QNu Labs, emphasized that the successful 5.56 km demonstration paves the way for longer-distance quantum-secure networks and satellite-based quantum communication. Cmde Manish Tripathi (Retd.), In-charge, ISTF, IIT Gandhinagar, added that the demonstration provides a valuable field environment for advancing practical quantum communication technologies and showcases how academia, indigenous technology, and real-world experimentation can be integrated to meet emerging secure communication requirements.\n\nThe trial provides a foundation for advancing India's capabilities in secure communication infrastructure, strengthening resilience against emerging quantum-era security threats.\n\n### About BISAG-N\nBISAG-N is an autonomous scientific society under MeitY, working in space technology applications, satellite communication, geo-informatics, and supporting technology-driven governance.\n\n### About IIT Gandhinagar\nFounded in 2008, IITGN is a leading institution focused on excellence in engineering, science, technology, humanities, and social sciences. The Institute promotes interdisciplinary research, innovative education, and solutions to real-world challenges.\n\n### About QNu Labs\nFounded in 2016, QNu Labs is India's pioneer in quantum-secure digital infrastructure, offering sovereign products and solutions deployed globally.\n\nThis breakthrough has significant implications for India's national security and its ability to protect sensitive information in the face of emerging quantum-era security threats. As the country continues to advance its capabilities in quantum-secure communication, it is likely to play a major role in shaping the future of secure communication infrastructure globally.\n\nIn conclusion, India's successful demonstration of a 5.56-km free-space QKD link is a testament to the country's commitment to innovation and its ability to push the boundaries of what is possible in the field of quantum-secure communication.
