India's defense sector has taken a significant leap forward with the confirmation of the Advanced Short Range Air-to-Air Missile's (ASRAAM) Final Assembly, Integration, and Test facility at Bharat Dynamics Limited's (BDL) Bhanur Unit. This milestone marks a major achievement for India's indigenous defense capabilities, as the ASRAAM missile is set to revolutionize the country's air-to-air combat capabilities.

The ASRAAM, designated as the AIM-132, is a high-speed, imaging infrared (IIR) homing missile produced by MBDA. It was first selected for use on the Indian Air Force's (IAF) Jaguar aircraft, followed by the Tejas Mk1A, and will also feature on both Su-30MKI and Naval MiG-29K platforms. The missile is designed for high-energy, rapid closure, reaching speeds in excess of Mach 3, with an operational range extending up to 25 km to 50 km.

One of the key features of the ASRAAM is its imaging infrared seeker, which processes the physical shape of the target, rendering standard defensive flares ineffective. This advanced technology allows the ASRAAM to track its target with precision, even in the most challenging environments. Additionally, the missile features Lock-On After Launch (LOAL) capabilities, which enable pilots to fire at enemy aircraft hiding in blind spots simply by looking at them.

The IAF has plans to integrate the ASRAAM onto 56 MiG-29UPG and 74 Jaguar platforms, and make it the standard Close Combat Missile for the newly ordered 180 LCA Tejas Mk1A fleet. The IAF is expected to place an order for at least 500 units of the locally assembled ASRAAM, following the last major order placed in 2014 for around 384 missiles directly with MBDA.
