Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Unveils Rs 472-Crore Tank Overhaul Facility in Jabalpur

In a significant move to bolster India's position as a global defence manufacturing hub, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh laid the foundation stone for a Rs 472-crore T-series tank overhaul facility in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. The facility, which is expected to be operational in the near future, will play a crucial role in enhancing the Indian Army's capabilities in ground warfare.

The Defence Minister emphasized that despite the changing nature of warfare, the relevance of tanks has not diminished but evolved. He noted that the advent of drones, precision-guided weapons, missiles, satellites, artificial intelligence, and cyber warfare has transformed the battlefield, but the role of tanks remains vital. Singh stressed that a combination of different weapon systems, including tanks, drones, and missiles, is essential for a country to achieve its military objectives.

The facility, which will be set up at the 57-year-old Vehicle Factory Jabalpur (VFJ), an ordnance unit, will have the capacity to overhaul 80 T-72 and T-90 tanks annually. This will help bridge the existing shortfall in tank overhauling, which currently stands at around 230 tanks per year. The Heavy Vehicles Factory (HVF) at Avadi, Tamil Nadu, currently overhauls around 150 tanks annually.

Singh highlighted the importance of having a resilient domestic supply chain, strong industrial capacity, and the ability to innovate rapidly. He noted that countries possessing advanced technologies, robust industrial capabilities, and dynamic innovation ecosystems will be better equipped to withstand prolonged conflicts. The Defence Minister emphasized that India's emergence as a global manufacturing hub, a reliable technology partner, and a trusted defence partner is reflected in its efforts to manufacture defence equipment domestically, undertake repair and maintenance within the country, and develop next-generation capabilities indigenously.

The T-series tank overhaul facility will not only generate employment opportunities in Jabalpur and surrounding areas but also create opportunities for local micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in manufacturing and ancillary services associated with tank overhauling. The project will help develop a strong and self-sustaining industrial ecosystem, which will be a boon for soldiers and the local population.
