India's Strategic Defence Upgrade: S-400 Fleet Expansion to Counter China Threats

In a significant move to bolster its air defence capabilities, India is poised to acquire additional S-400 squadrons, with a focus on the China front. The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) had cleared the proposal in March 2026, and the Ministry of Defence (MOD) is currently evaluating the technical and commercial value of the proposal submitted by Russia.

The estimated cost of the project is over Rs 50,000 crore, which will be used to procure five more S-400 squadrons. This acquisition is expected to fill the existing gaps in India's air defence coverage, particularly in the eastern Himalayan and northeastern sector against China. The current coverage against China is thin and largely indirect, with Pathankot "overlooking" Ladakh rather than directly covering it, and Siliguri covering the corridor rather than the frontier itself.

The Strategic Importance of the S-400 System

The S-400 system is a game-changer in modern air defence, offering advanced radar capabilities and a range of up to 400 km. Its high-altitude terrain capabilities also play to its strengths, extending line-of-sight detection range, which makes it an ideal choice for deployment in Ladakh or Arunachal Pradesh. The system's ability to detect and track targets at long range makes it an effective deterrent against Chinese fifth-generation fighters and long-range precision-strike capability opposite these sectors.

Deployment Plans and Strategy

The Indian Air Force (IAF) plans to deploy at least three S-400 squadrons for the Pakistan sector, backed by one unit that will provide coverage to the New Delhi and National Capital Region (NCR) area. The deployment of the 5th unit, which was placed in 2018, might be temporarily shifted to cover the New Delhi and NCR area, which will act as a dedicated unit guarding the region against aerial threats.

However, the exact number of S-400 units to be deployed towards China remains classified. Analysts believe that the next five S-400 units will focus more on the northern frontier, covering Ladakh, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh. This region is vulnerable to Chinese air force exploitation due to the lack of long-range air defence systems. To fill this gap, the Indian military is also deploying MR-SAM units in the area.

Unified Long-Range Air Defence Batteries

Once Project-Kusha is inducted, the region will be fully covered under unified long-range air defence batteries. This will provide a comprehensive air defence umbrella, protecting India's western-based industrial corridor and naval areas from aerial threats. The S-400 system will be able to move between the middle western section and lower south-western section when required, providing flexibility and adaptability to the Indian military's air defence strategy.
