India's Indigenous Anti-Drone Solution Takes Shape

In a significant development for the country's defence capabilities, Gujarat-based RRV Defence has successfully developed an anti-drone bullet that has been patented in India. This innovative solution is designed to counter the growing threat of smaller unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that have been increasingly used in various capacities, including surveillance, reconnaissance, and even combat.

The patented anti-drone bullet is based on a kinetic hard-kill principle, which involves physically hitting the target to destroy or disable it. This approach differs from electronic-warfare methods, which attempt to spoof signals or data links used by UAVs for navigation, guidance, or communications. According to Ravi R Patel, the founder of RRV Defence, the company began exploring this idea in 2022, following the proliferation of drones that posed a potential problem.

"We recognized the need for an indigenous solution to counter the threat of smaller UAVs, which are increasingly being used by adversaries," Patel explained. "Our approach fills a gap between existing air-defence missiles and the need to defend against much cheaper drones. We aimed to develop a system that could be integrated with existing systems, without the need to completely re-invent the wheel on a new missile or launcher."

The anti-drone bullet is designed to be a cost-effective solution, addressing the concern that existing air-defence missiles are often too expensive to deploy against smaller, cheaper drones. Patel pointed out that a single surface-to-air missile can cost upwards of $500,000, while a commercial-off-the-shelf drone can be purchased for as little as $500.

Modern battlefields are increasingly characterized by the presence of small UAVs, which can be bought in large numbers at relatively low cost. Military forces and defence companies around the world are exploring various approaches to counter this threat, from traditional artillery to directed-energy weapons and even intercepting drones with other drones.

RRV Defence took a unique approach to addressing this problem by considering the potential weaponization of commercial-off-the-shelf technology. The company aimed to develop an indigenous solution that was affordable, controllable, and safe, while also capable of taking out enemy drones.

While the company has not yet publicly demonstrated independent test results of the anti-drone bullet, Patel acknowledged that there is still a lot of testing and development that needs to happen to fully demonstrate the capabilities of this technology.

Indian defence officials are exploring layered approaches to UAV defence, recognizing that there is no one-size-fits-all technology. UAVs can range from simple quadcopters with cameras to more complex systems like fixed-wing UAVs with beyond visual-range sensors and extended loitering capability.

Interception and kill methods would need to be tailored to each size category, highlighting the complexity of the challenge. However, RRV Defence's patented anti-drone bullet represents a significant step forward in India's efforts to develop indigenous solutions to counter the growing threat of smaller UAVs.
