Explore CNC Systems →India and France Strengthen Maritime Ties through Varuna Exercise\n\nThe 24th edition of the India-France Varuna maritime exercise has come to a close, with the Indian warship INS Trishul playing a key role in the proceedings. The exercise, which took place in Toulon, France, saw the INS Trishul participate in both harbour and sea phases, engaging in a range of professional, sporting, and cultural exchanges with the French Navy.\n\nOne of the highlights of the exercise was the ceremonial water cannon salute that the INS Trishul received upon its arrival in Toulon. This warm welcome was a testament to the strong and enduring maritime partnership between India and France.\n\nDuring the harbour phase, the INS Trishul's crew interacted with senior leadership of the French Navy, including RAdm Mackara Ouk, Deputy Commander-in-Chief for Operations (CECMED). The crew also laid wreaths at the Mazargues War Memorial in Marseille, paying tribute to the 205 Indian soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice during the World Wars.\n\nProfessional engagements during the harbour phase included cross-deck visits and exchange of operational experiences, which contributed to enhanced interoperability between the two navies. The INS Trishul also hosted a cultural interaction onboard, attended by VAdm (Retd) Laurent Isnard, Deputy Mayor of Toulon, officers of the French Navy, and civil dignitaries.\n\nA friendly volleyball match was also held, further fostering camaraderie between personnel of the two navies. The INS Trishul's crew also visited French Navy ships Charles de Gaulle, Forbin, and La Fayette, gaining insights into carrier operations, aviation facilities, and practices followed onboard.\n\nThe sea phase of the exercise saw the INS Trishul exercising alongside French Navy units, including FDA Forbin, FLF La Fayette, and SNA Suffren, as well as NH90 helicopters and Atlantique 2 maritime patrol aircraft. Anti-submarine, anti-surface, and live-firing exercises, along with cross-deck helicopter landing serials, enhanced operational coordination, interoperability, and synergy between the two navies.\n\nThe visit of INS Trishul to Toulon reaffirms the strong and enduring maritime partnership between India and France and the commitment of both navies to strengthening maritime engagement, interoperability, and professional exchanges.\n\nThrough exercises like Varuna, India and France are able to strengthen their maritime ties, enhance interoperability, and build on their shared commitment to regional security and stability.\n\nAs the two navies continue to work together, they will be able to address common challenges and threats, and build on their shared vision for a secure and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.
