IAF's Inflatable Decoy Strategy: A Game-Changer for Air Force Operations

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has been at the forefront of adopting innovative technologies to enhance its operational capabilities. One such initiative is the deployment of inflatable decoys to deceive adversary sensors and radar-guided threats. This strategy has been successfully tested with the procurement of 400 multi-spectral decoys for frontline fighter jets, including the Su-30MKI.

The IAF's decision to procure inflatable decoys for Tejas Mk1A and Rafale jets is a significant development. These two types of jets will be used in large numbers, and rivals will be keen to track their deployment pattern and host airbases. To counter this, the IAF is looking to place fresh orders with private sector companies to develop 1:1-size decoys of the real aircraft that can sustain high winds and replicate the signatures of the real aircraft.

The inflatable decoys are designed to pack into compact containers and can be inflated and set up quickly by ground crews with minimal effort. These high-fidelity decoys have already been deployed at frontline airbases, forward operating pads, and dispersed airfields to serve as tactical targets in case of a first strike from the other side.

The IAF's tactics involve forcing its opponent to waste precision munitions or cruise missiles on dummy targets, while protecting real frontline assets, complicating adversary strike planning, and obscuring actual force strength. These indigenously designed models, like the one developed by Altair Infrasec, are procured under India's Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP) through local MSME and private defence partnerships.

The IAF is planning to come up with major requirements in the coming weeks, and companies will be invited to develop decoys that are highly accurate. After reviews of their proposals, these companies will be invited to get access to these aircraft to carry out a high rate of scans so that they can later develop decoys that can be used to fool rivals in the region.

With almost all IAF airbases under satellite coverage by its rivals that monitor the movement of aircraft and their deployment patterns, it has now become useful to deploy such decoys so that the element of surprise is maintained in case the air force is required to respond to an operation and the enemy is watching closely.

The deployment of inflatable decoys is a significant step towards enhancing the IAF's operational capabilities.
