\
The Indian Air Force (IAF) has been proactively training fighter pilots to fly the Tejas Mk1A, despite the expected delays in deliveries. According to sources, at least 20 pilots have already been trained to operate the advanced fighter jet.\

Explore Carbon Fiber โHAL, the manufacturer of the Tejas Mk1A, is set to deliver 2 squadrons worth of jets by mid-2027, with a further 1.5 squadrons annually thereafter. This will require nearly two-digit pilots per year to fly the aircraft.\
\
The IAF has not stopped pilot conversion training, despite the delays in deliveries. In fact, the Sulur Air Force Station has become a Tejas training ground for new pilots, who will be deployed at future Tejas Mk1A squadrons.\
\
The IAF expects to receive at least 2 squadrons' worth of jets by mid-next year, with half of the squadrons consisting of Mk1A and trainer aircraft. HAL has received 14 F-404 engines from GE, with 8 more on the way by the end of this year. GE has promised to deliver 30 engines by next year.\
\
A typical fighter squadron fields 16-18 aircraft, with roughly 25-30 officers in total. The IAF's pilot-to-cockpit ratio for fighters is 0.81, compared to 2.5 for Pakistan.\
\
According to sources, the number of pilots trained to fly the Tejas Mk1A could reach three digits by 2028. HAL has promised to deliver 30 aircraft per year from 2028 onwards, which means 1.5 squadrons will be inducted per year, requiring nearly two-digit pilots per year.\
\
The IAF is expected to clear the formation of at least two squadrons by next year, based in the Western Sector and Northern Sector, replacing older MiG-21 squadrons. Tejas Mk1 Simulators and the recent delivery of two more Tejas Mk1 Trainers will help speed up the conversion of pilots to fly the newer Tejas Mk1A.\
\
From 2028 onwards, the IAF is expected to take a call on the retirement of the older Jaguar squadrons, which are still flying in the Darin-I and II configurations. Maintaining these older jets is getting difficult, and the IAF is keen to retire Jaguars first, as the Mirage-2000 and MiG-29UPG fleets still have fleet support from their OEM.\
\
In conclusion, the IAF's proactive pilot training program is a testament to its commitment to preparing for the induction of the Tejas Mk1A. With the expected delays in deliveries, the IAF is ensuring that its pilots are ready to operate the advanced fighter jet, which will play a crucial role in enhancing the country's air defense capabilities.
