HAL's LUH Upgrade Revolutionizes High-Altitude Operations

The Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has made significant improvements to its Light Utility Helicopter (LUH), a three-tonne class helicopter designed for utility roles, reconnaissance, casualty evacuation, and troop transport. The LUH is intended to assist India's armed forces in various terrains, including the challenging high-altitude regions of the Himalayas.

The LUH is powered by the Safran Ardiden 1U turboshaft engine, which has been developed specifically for single-engine rotorcraft. The engine features a digital engine-control system and has undergone high-altitude testing in the Himalayas, including take-offs from sites above 5,500 metres while carrying heavy payloads. The engine has been certified by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency and India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation for relevant applications.

The LUH programme was launched by HAL to replace the ageing fleets of Cheetah, Chetak, and similar light helicopters. The programme aims to procure and induct about 187 light utility helicopters for both the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force.
