Explore CNC Systems →HAL's Hindustan Lead-in Fighter Trainer: A Revolutionary Design Evolution\n\nState-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has been working on a new design for its Hindustan Lead-in Fighter Trainer (HLFT-42), which is set to be showcased at Aero India 2027. The new design has undergone significant changes since its initial unveiling at Aero India 2023, and it is now clear that the HLFT-42 has taken a distinct departure from the HF-24 Marut-inspired scale model that was first showcased.\n\nThe HLFT-42 drawing, which was included in the tender documents, reveals that the new design retains the Tejas DNA in its forward fuselage and single-fin delta planform. However, in silhouette, it bears a striking resemblance to an older American fighter, the F/A-18 Hornet, which is no longer in production.\n\nAccording to the tender documents, the HLFT-42 is expected to have a length of approximately 16.4 meters, a span of 9.0 meters, and a height of 4.7 meters. This makes it slightly longer than the earlier design showcased by HAL. The HLFT-42 is also roughly 1.7 meters longer and 0.8 meters wider across the wings than the Mk2, which was already established in the old design.\n\nOne of the most noticeable design changes is the leading-edge root extensions, which blend into the wing. This feature is likely intended to make up for the no-canards decision that is seen in the Tejas Mk2 platform. The tail and dorsal spine have also been reshaped, and the wing has moved from a low-mounted to a mid-mounted position.\n\nThe HLFT-42 concept seems to be a combination of low-mounted side intakes, large leading-edge root extensions blending into a mid-set swept wing, a long slender fuselage, and a swept single fin that echoes the Tejas Mk1 XL. HAL has recently confirmed that it will be offering Tejas-based trainer aircraft for the IAF's tender for Stage-III trainer aircraft.\n\nThe new HLFT-42 design appears to draw inspiration from the 13.5-ton Tejas Mk Trainer, but with the stretch of MkII, while still carrying on many of the design clues from the Mk1A legacy. It seems that HAL plans to offer a 16.5-ton aircraft that combines the best features of the Tejas, HF-24, and F/A-18.\n\nIn conclusion, the HLFT-42 design is a significant departure from the earlier design, and it is clear that HAL has taken a bold approach in creating a revolutionary new aircraft. The HLFT-42 is expected to be showcased at Aero India 2027, and it will be interesting to see how it performs in comparison to other aircraft in its class.
