GE Aerospace has significantly accelerated the delivery of F404-IN20 engines to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in recent months. The latest consignment of four engines, shipped in September 2026, brings the total number of engines delivered to 14, with eight more expected by the end of the year.

This rapid pace of delivery is crucial for the Tejas Mk1A production programme, which has been delayed in the past. The F404-IN20 engine is the powerplant selected for the single-engine Tejas Mk1A, and GE Aerospace's contract with HAL covers the engines and their associated support services.

According to sources, GE Aerospace had previously shipped three engines to HAL in August, raising the tally to 10. HAL had received six F404 engines by the end of the 2025-26 financial year. The company then accelerated the deliveries, with three engines shipped in August before the latest September consignment.

The initial order for the Mk1A requires 99 F404-IN20 engines under a separate HAL-GE contract signed in 2021. GE Aerospace is now expected to ramp up deliveries with eight more F404 engines targeted for delivery by the end of 2026. Maintaining this pace would see the total number of engines delivered during the year enable HAL to equip more completed aircraft and support the next phase of Mk1A production.

HAL has already produced a significant number of Mk1A airframes, with earlier reporting indicating that about 30 aircraft had been built or were at various stages of completion. GE Aerospace's commitment to delivering the engines needed to power India's Tejas fighters is a significant boost to the programme.

GE Aerospace's spokesperson said that the company is committed to delivering the engines needed to power India's Tejas fighters, and it is proud to partner with HAL and the Indian Air Force. The company aims to clear the backlog by 2028, supplying 30 engines annually to meet the initial order of 99 engines.

The delivery of F404-IN20 engines is a critical component of the Tejas Mk1A production programme. The engine's performance and reliability will have a significant impact on the programme's success. GE Aerospace's commitment to delivering high-quality engines on time is essential for the programme's progress.

In conclusion, GE Aerospace's accelerated delivery of F404-IN20 engines to HAL is a significant development for the Tejas Mk1A production programme. The company's commitment to delivering high-quality engines on time is essential for the programme's progress, and its partnership with HAL and the Indian Air Force is a crucial factor in the programme's success.
