Explore CNC Systems →Electromagnetic Launchers: India's Private Sector Partnership for Next-Gen Defence Tech\n\nIn a significant move, Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (AVNL) has issued two Expression of Interest (EOI) for the development and supply of components for an Electromagnetic Launcher (EML) system. This marks a significant shift beyond traditional tank production capabilities for the Heavy Vehicles Factory, Avadi, which is AVNL's principal tank-producing unit.\n\nThe EML system is a type of weaponry that uses electromagnetic force to launch a projectile, as opposed to conventional firearms that primarily rely on gunpowder combustion. The launch barrel is only one element in an EML system, and other critical areas include high-power electrical systems, power supplies, and pulse-forming networks for energy storage and capacitor switching, electromagnetic acceleration systems, mechanical structures, including launch barrel support systems subjected to extreme forces, and the drive mechanisms for the launch platform.\n\nInstead of developing in-house capabilities for each of the systems and subsystems required for an EML, AVNL is looking to partner with firms that have the competencies to design and develop specific areas of the electromagnetic launcher system. This places increased importance on harnessing the capabilities of the private sector industry.\n\nThe first EOI, bearing reference number HVF/EML/ASSY/18092026, has been invited from industry players for the design, development and supply of an EM Launch Barrel Assembly and Electrical Accessories for an Electromagnetic Launcher system. The EOI was published on September 18 with the closing date for submission of bids set for October 16, 2026.\n\nA second EOI, HVF/EML/DRIVES/26-27, was issued on September 19. It covers similar ground in terms of scope for industry input but this one is for the design, development and supply of an EM Launch Barrel Platform and Drives with a closing date of October 17.\n\nThe two requirements cover the launch assembly, electrical accessories, support platform and drives necessary to demonstrate an electromagnetic launcher system.\n\nAVNL states that HVF is its “principal tank producing unit” which has “infrastructure for tank production, assemblies and overhaul.” However, the launch barrel is only one element in an EML system, and other critical areas require specialized expertise.\n\nBy partnering with private sector firms, AVNL aims to leverage their capabilities and expertise to develop a next-gen electromagnetic launcher system. This collaboration will not only enhance the capabilities of the Indian defence industry but also contribute to the development of cutting-edge defence technology.\n\nIn conclusion, the partnership between AVNL and private sector firms marks a significant milestone in the development of electromagnetic launchers in India. This collaboration will pave the way for the development of next-gen defence technology and enhance the capabilities of the Indian defence industry.
