India's Defence Research Takes a Leap Forward: Airborne Laser Power System in the Works

In a significant development, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has initiated the process of developing an Airborne Liquid-Cooled Power Converter System for a laser system. This move reflects the organisation's growing focus on addressing the power and thermal-management needs of an airborne laser weapon.

The tender, published on the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) on September 30, 2026, invites bids for the development of a power converter system that can condition and convert the platform's electrical power to the required form for the laser and associated electronics. The system will play a crucial role in enabling the effective operation of an airborne laser system, which requires a reliable and efficient power supply to function optimally.

The power converter system is designed to be liquid-cooled, which is essential for balancing the heat generated by high-power electronics within the limited weight and volume constraints of an airborne platform. The system's ability to manage heat will be critical in ensuring the reliability and performance of the airborne laser system.

The DRDO's interest in developing an airborne laser power system is not an isolated effort. The organisation has also issued a separate tender for the development of an airborne battery system for a high-power laser system. Additionally, a requirement has been floated for the development of a latent-heat-storage-based thermal-management system for airborne applications, including a prototype unit.

These initiatives collectively illustrate the support infrastructure needed to operate high-power equipment in an airborne environment. While there is no public confirmation that these tenders are part of a single weapon programme, they do indicate a concerted effort by the DRDO to address the technical challenges associated with developing an airborne laser system.

The DRDO has previously showcased the GoAL – Airborne Laser DEW Pod concept, which features an MWIR sensor, laser range finder, and beam director. This concept demonstrates the organisation's commitment to developing advanced technologies for airborne laser systems.

The development of an airborne laser power system is a significant step forward in India's defence research. The system's ability to provide a reliable and efficient power supply will be critical in enabling the effective operation of an airborne laser system. The DRDO's efforts in this area are expected to have a significant impact on the development of advanced defence technologies in India.
