India's Nuclear-Powered Submarine Project Gains Momentum Amidst Global Developments

The recent unveiling of China's cutting-edge nuclear-powered attack submarine, equipped with a pumpjet propulsor, has reignited discussions surrounding India's own Project 77, a planned acquisition of a new class of nuclear-powered attack submarines for the country's naval forces. Satellite images captured by Jane's platform on September 1 reveal a next-generation Chinese SSN Type 095, boasting a clearly visible shrouded pumpjet and X-shaped stern planes, offering a glimpse into the future of submarine design.

The Type 095's pumpjet technology, where the propulsor is enclosed within a shroud, utilizes specialized rotors and stators to modify the incoming water flow. This design not only reduces the submarine's acoustic signature at high speeds but also provides hydrodynamic benefits in certain maneuvers. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has previously highlighted pumpjet technology as a means to lower submarine acoustic signatures and enhance maneuverability.

India's Project 77, aimed at procuring two nuclear-powered attack submarines, has been approved and is currently in the planning stages. The proposed submarines are expected to have a displacement of approximately 10,000 tonnes. The project provides India with an opportunity to consider adopting alternative propulsion technologies, unlike its more advanced S5 ballistic missile submarine program.

France, a nation renowned for its expertise in nuclear submarine propulsion technology, has already mastered the pumpjet propulsion system, as seen in its Barracuda-class nuclear attack submarines. France has also offered its know-how in pumpjet technology to India for the realization of future submarine platforms, including Project 77.

The Chinese Type 095's cutting-edge design, incorporating a next-generation pumpjet propulsor and X-shaped stern planes, demonstrates Beijing's commitment to pushing the boundaries of submarine hydrodynamics. This configuration is expected to provide enhanced maneuverability and control, as well as hydrodynamic and acoustic benefits.

As India's Project 77 gains momentum, the country is likely to face a crucial decision: whether to pursue foreign cooperation or attempt to develop the technology indigenously. While the latter option would result in longer development timelines, it would enable India to acquire critical technologies and enhance its strategic security.
