Central Asia's Shift Towards Indian Defence Equipment: A Strategic Opportunity\n\nIndia's defence industry has been making waves in the global market, with its Akash air defence system gaining significant traction in Central Asia. The recent sale of Akash-1S systems to Tajikistan and Turkmenistan has created a buzz, with defence analysts predicting wider Indian military equipment sales to these countries.\n\nThe Akash system's success in Armenia and its reported use in the 2025 India-Pakistan conflict have demonstrated its battle-hardened capabilities. This operational experience gives India a marketing edge, potentially boosting its defence exports and refining other products for international markets.\n\nA fellow at the Observer Research Foundation in Delhi noted that both Central Asian countries could consider additional Indian defence equipment after acquiring the Akash-1S. "After procuring the Akash-1S systems, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan, similar to Armenia, are likely to consider importing other Indian military equipment, including radar systems, artillery, and missiles," said Aleksei Zakharov.\n\nThe remark reflects a wider possibility for India's defence export strategy. A customer that successfully operates one Indian weapon system can potentially become a market for other platforms, particularly those that share logistics, training, or support requirements.\n\nArmenia provides an early example of this trend. The country became the first confirmed foreign customer for the Akash system and has also become an important market for other Indian defence products.\n\nAntoine Levesques, senior fellow for South and Central Asian defence at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, said that part of Akash's appeal was that it had become a "battle-hardened system," referring to its reported use during the brief India-Pakistan conflict in 2025. The experience gives India an opportunity to market Akash not only on specifications but also on operational experience.\n\nThe system has evolved considerably from its initial configuration, with the Akash-1S incorporating an indigenous seeker and other improvements over the original system. Levesques also linked the Akash sales to the broader growth of India's defence exports. "Foreign sales of Akash provide added evidence that India's exports of defence articles are picking up pace," he said.\n\nHe added that feedback from export customers could help India refine other defence products being prepared for international markets. The reported Akash sales give India a foothold in two Central Asian defence markets where Russian-origin equipment has traditionally had a major presence.\n\nThis development is significant, as it marks a shift towards Indian defence equipment in the region. The Akash system's success has paved the way for India's defence industry to expand its global footprint. As India continues to refine its defence products and marketing strategies, it is likely to attract more customers in Central Asia and beyond.\n\nIn conclusion, the Akash air defence system's success in Central Asia is a strategic opportunity for India's defence industry. The system's battle-hardened capabilities, operational experience, and potential for further refinement make it an attractive option for countries looking to upgrade their defence capabilities. As India continues to explore new markets and customers, the Akash system is likely to remain a key player in the region's defence landscape.
