Explore CNC Systems →Indian Navy's Indigenous GPS Initiative: Enhancing Naval Air-Defence Capabilities
The Indian Navy has taken a significant step towards bolstering its naval air-defence capabilities by issuing a tender for indigenous GPS PS1 and PS2 assemblies for its Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM) system. This initiative aims to establish an Indian industrial base for future upgrades and enhance supply resilience through indigenization of critical components.
The tender, which was floated on 02.09.2026, is for one development lot in Mumbai and is part of an earlier Navy tender for indigenous design and development of GPS antenna for MRSAM system in July 2025. The new requirement is also linked to another tender released on 16th September for the repair and overhauling of the MRSAM GPS antenna.
The MRSAM system is a medium-range air-to-air missile system developed by collaboration between India's DRDO and Israel's Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). The system is designed as an air-defence system for ships, and one component in the larger chain of electronics and supporting equipment necessary to maintain an advanced missile system is navigation-related electronics.

Explore Carbon Fiber →Making the replacement assemblies in-house could make these assemblies more supply resilient, easier to maintain in the long-term, and establish an Indian industrial base for future upgrades. This initiative is part of a far more extensive Indian Navy initiative on satellite-navigation technology.
In June 2026, the Ministry of Defence inked a deal worth ₹449 crore with Accord Software and Systems of Bengaluru for the Navy for 20 Enhanced Capability GNSS (ECGNSS) jammers. Both systems are at least 75% indigenous, and are intended to disrupt adversary GNSS signal acquisition and tracking as well as enable spoofing and deceptive-jamming capabilities.
The two systems are aimed at different aspects of the satellite-navigation world: the one is looking at producing native hardware related to a naval missile system, the other at creating an indigenous electronic-warfare capability against an enemy navigation system. The Indian Navy's pursuit of indigenous GPS solutions is a strategic move to enhance its naval air-defence capabilities and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers.

Strategic Analysis
The Indian Navy's indigenous GPS initiative is a significant step towards enhancing its naval air-defence capabilities. By developing indigenous GPS assemblies, the Navy can reduce its dependence on foreign suppliers and enhance supply resilience. This initiative also aligns with the Indian government's 'Make in India' initiative, which aims to promote indigenous manufacturing and reduce dependence on foreign imports.
Conclusion
The Indian Navy's pursuit of indigenous GPS solutions is a strategic move to enhance its naval air-defence capabilities and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers. By developing indigenous GPS assemblies, the Navy can enhance supply resilience, reduce maintenance costs, and establish an Indian industrial base for future upgrades. This initiative is part of a far more extensive Indian Navy initiative on satellite-navigation technology, and it has the potential to transform the country's naval air-defence capabilities in the years to come.
