Defence-Academia-Industry Collaboration: A Catalyst for Indigenous Defence Tech

The Indian government's commitment to 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' has led to a renewed focus on defence-academia-industry collaboration. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has emphasized the importance of strengthening indigenous technological capabilities, citing the rapidly evolving nature of warfare and the need for innovative solutions.

The Growing Interlinkage between National Security and Technological Capability

The intersection of national security and technological capability is becoming increasingly critical. Artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, unmanned platforms, advanced sensors, cybersecurity, and space-based technologies are reshaping military dynamics. IITs can play a significant role in addressing these challenges by aligning academic research with operational defence requirements and industry needs.

The Aatmanirbhar Bharat Vision

The 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' vision aims to create a technologically capable nation, with IITs driving innovation, entrepreneurship, and patent growth through scientific advancements. The government has made sustained efforts to strengthen the ecosystem, with a growing contribution to innovation and entrepreneurship reflected in the IIT ecosystem's support for over 6,000 start-ups, 56 unicorns, and nearly 5,000 patents.

IIT Kanpur's Role in Defence-Academia-Industry Collaboration

IIT Kanpur has been at the forefront of defence-academia-industry collaboration. The institute has established a DRDO-Industry-Academia Centre of Excellence and is working towards setting up a School of Defence Technologies. The proposal to establish a National Military Drone Technology Hub at IIT Kanpur, in collaboration with the Ministry of Defence, has made significant progress and is nearing completion.

The Importance of Strong Institutions of Higher Education and Research

Strong institutions of higher education and research are critical to realising the 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' vision. The government has approved a Rs 1 lakh crore Research, Development, and Innovation Scheme to catalyse private-sector investment in research and advanced technologies. While public policy can create an enabling environment, institutions must nurture talent and generate ideas, and industry must help translate innovations into practical applications and scale them up.

The 'Greater Than Us' Campaign

IIT Kanpur's 'Greater Than Us' campaign aims to raise US$1 billion by March 2029, with the goal of strengthening the institute's research infrastructure, nurturing talent, and accelerating the development and commercialisation of indigenous technologies and innovations. The campaign has already received commitments of Rs 4,155 crore, nearly half of the goal.

Conclusion

The defence-academia-industry collaboration is a strategic imperative for India. By strengthening indigenous technological capabilities, the country can reduce its dependence on foreign technologies and develop innovative solutions to address national and global challenges. The 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' vision and the 'Greater Than Us' campaign are crucial steps towards achieving this goal. As India continues to evolve as a technologically capable nation, the defence-academia-industry collaboration will play a vital role in shaping its future.
