India's Akash Missile: A Unique Approach to Surface-to-Air Defence

In the realm of modern surface-to-air missile platforms, the Indian Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has taken a distinct approach with its Akash missile system. Unlike many of its contemporaries, the Akash missile is not launched from a sealed canister, instead relying on a rail launcher system. This unconventional design choice is rooted in the missile's early development stages, where its creators envisioned a system that could operate from mobile platforms with integrated ramjet propulsion and aerodynamic surfaces.

The Legacy of the Akash Missile

The Akash missile was born out of the Integrated Guided Missile Development programme, which aimed to create a robust surface-to-air missile system for the Indian armed forces. Introduced into service nearly two decades before the advent of compact, canister-launched air-defence missile systems, the Akash missile was designed to operate from mobile launchers, which carried multiple rounds in their silos, on trailers, or heavy-duty vehicles. The decision to expose the rails allowed the launch mechanism to remain relatively unobtrusive, eliminating the need for a complex airframe/canister/launcher arrangement.

Design Considerations and Packaging Challenges

The Akash missile's original propulsion system and aerodynamics were not based on a self-contained air-launch architecture. The combination of ramjet-rocket propulsion and the use of an external solid rocket booster (SRB) to provide acceleration and sustenance created packaging challenges. The SRB also played a crucial role in managing ramjet airflow, which required considerable design consideration around an enclosure or canister. However, the DRDO literature suggests that the Akash missile was not inherently incompatible with enclosed launch, but its design was not optimized for such a system.

The Importance of Design Synergy

The development of the Akash missile highlights the significance of design synergy between the missile, its launch system, and its containerized launch apparatus. Canisters offer operational advantages such as protected storage, ease of transport, stable internal conditions, and a compact launch platform. However, these benefits are tied to a missile that is designed alongside its containerized launch apparatus. In the case of the Akash missile, its early development stages precluded the integration of a canister launch system, making it more challenging to redesign the system for canister launch at a later stage.

Key Takeaways

  • The Akash missile is launched from a rail launcher system, unlike many modern surface-to-air missile platforms that use sealed canisters.
  • The missile's design was influenced by its early development stages, where it was conceived to operate from mobile platforms with integrated ramjet propulsion and aerodynamic surfaces.
  • The Akash missile's original propulsion system and aerodynamics were not based on a self-contained air-launch architecture, creating packaging challenges and design considerations around an enclosure or canister.
  • The importance of design synergy between the missile, its launch system, and its containerized launch apparatus is highlighted by the Akash missile's development.
