Red Balloon Aerospace Expands Reach with Indian Partners

Red Balloon Aerospace (RBA) has taken a significant step in expanding its airborne networking capabilities by partnering with two Indian technology firms, Skynetics Pvt. Ltd. and Astrome. The Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) signed between RBA and the Indian firms aim to combine expertise and develop innovative airborne networking solutions that can extend the reach of networks beyond challenging or economically-disadvantageous terrain.

RBA is considering using airborne platforms to meet the demand for connectivity in areas where traditional network infrastructure is impractical or uneconomical. The company has not yet disclosed the terms of the two MoUs, including the specifics of what technical contributions or timelines for delivery might look like.

Skynetics, based in Bengaluru, develops satellite subsystems, communications modules, long-range transceivers, and ground stations. The company's inventory spans both deep space and critical communications, making it an ideal partner for RBA's airborne networking vision. Astrome, on the other hand, focuses on developing wireless and satellite communications systems and components, including E-band radios for terrestrial broadband backhaul, software-defined modems, and satellite communication hardware for use across ground, air, and space networks.

The MoUs may enable RBA to identify how the technologies of each firm could be integrated into its airborne networking vision. This collaboration has the potential to expand connectivity to challenging locations worldwide, making it an exciting development in the field of airborne networking.

RBA has also mentioned its ongoing collaboration with Swedish firm Remos Space Systems AB, including a meeting with the company's Petter Lindberg. This builds on a separate India-Sweden partnership between Remos Space Systems and RBA, announced in July 2026, around an AI-augmented high-altitude balloon system for monitoring industrial emissions.

The system would use balloon-based sensors and communications to enable remote monitoring of industrial facilities, which represents one example of how airborne networks can support monitoring and logistics in challenging environments. The elevation of a balloon or similar airborne platform can provide a useful network extender in environments where erecting ground-based towers is impractical or uneconomical.

The partnership between RBA and the Indian firms is a significant step towards expanding the reach of airborne networking solutions. As the demand for connectivity in challenging locations continues to grow, RBA's collaboration with Skynetics and Astrome has the potential to make a significant impact. By combining expertise and developing innovative solutions, RBA is well-positioned to meet the demands of the market and provide connectivity to those who need it most.

In conclusion, the partnership between Red Balloon Aerospace and the Indian firms Skynetics and Astrome is a significant development in the field of airborne networking. With its potential to expand connectivity to challenging locations worldwide, this collaboration has the potential to make a significant impact in the years to come.
