A New Era of Radar Excellence

The Indian Air Force's Su-30MKI fighter jets are set to receive a major upgrade, thanks to the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) redesigning the X-band radome. This crucial component is not just a simple nose cone, but an electromagnetic window that allows radar energy to pass through while protecting the sensitive antenna from various environmental factors.

The Importance of a Matched Nose Cone

A highly advanced Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar like the Virupaksha is only as good as its supporting structure. A conventional nose cone can introduce excessive signal loss or unwanted reflections, reducing the radar's detection range and beam quality. The new radome is engineered to complement the Virupaksha radar's larger antenna, featuring a 2,400-radiating-element architecture and a 48×32 core array with tapered rows.

Aerodynamic Advantages

The slender ogive profile of the new radome offers several aerodynamic advantages. The longer shape reduces drag and improves airflow over the aircraft, making it more efficient and agile in combat situations. The tapered array also reduces edge diffraction, improving beam characteristics and lowering sidelobe levels.
