Indian Navy Enhances Training Capabilities with Advanced Simulation Systems

In a significant move to bolster the Indian Navy's training ecosystem, Delhi-based Applied Research International (ARI) Simulation, a subsidiary of Zen Technologies, has delivered a range of cutting-edge simulators designed to prepare personnel for complex combat, navigation, and engineering operations. The advanced simulation platforms, incorporating artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR), and augmented reality (AR) technologies, have been instrumental in strengthening the Navy's training capabilities.

Since its acquisition by Hyderabad-based Zen Technologies in February 2025, ARI has expanded its simulation capabilities to include naval and aerial platforms. The combined entity has also initiated research and development programmes focused on unmanned maritime systems, underscoring the growing importance of autonomous systems in future naval operations.

According to senior ARI officials, the company has secured new defence contracts and expanded its simulation offerings for the Indian Armed Forces. Speaking to Defence News Nexus, Director at ARI, Sanjay Kumar, highlighted the company's achievements in delivering advanced naval training systems to the Indian Navy. These systems include the Bridge Operations Simulator, Machinery Operations Simulator, and the Submarine Operations and Navigation Simulator.

The Bridge Operations Simulator is a flagship system that recreates the bridge of a naval warship and its surrounding operating environment with a high degree of realism. This simulator accurately models hydrological conditions, including varying sea states, wind patterns, weather conditions, and geographical features specified by the customer. Such capabilities enable naval crews to practise navigation, collision avoidance, harbour approaches, and tactical manoeuvres under both routine and adverse conditions.

The Machinery Operations Simulator provides engineering crews with realistic training on propulsion systems, power generation, and onboard machinery management. This enables personnel to respond effectively to equipment failures and emergency situations without disrupting operational vessels.

Similarly, the Submarine Operations and Navigation Simulator supports the specialised training requirements of submarine crews by replicating underwater navigation, tactical operations, and mission planning within a controlled virtual environment.

The Action Speed Tactical Trainer (ASTT) is designed to enhance tactical decision-making by allowing naval operators to practise combat scenarios. The upcoming Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle (DSRV) Simulator will support training for deep-sea rescue missions involving distressed submarines, an increasingly important capability as India's submarine fleet continues to expand.

A key feature across ARI's simulation portfolio is the integration of AI, VR, and AR technologies. AI enables more adaptive and realistic scenario generation, while VR and AR provide immersive environments that improve trainee engagement and accelerate skill development.

The acquisition of ARI has also enabled Zen Technologies to diversify beyond its established expertise in land warfare simulation. The company has expanded into aerial simulation and initiated research programmes focused on unmanned maritime vehicles, reflecting the growing importance of autonomous systems in future naval operations.

As the Indian Navy modernises its fleet with advanced warships, submarines, and unmanned platforms, simulation-based training is expected to play an increasingly important role in reducing costs, improving operational readiness, and ensuring crews are prepared for high-risk missions before deploying at sea.
