The Indian Navy's transformation is well underway, as the country accelerates its indigenous marine engine programme to break free from dependence on overseas suppliers. For over three decades, many of India's frontline warships relied on Ukrainian-origin marine propulsion systems, which powered major surface combatant classes, including destroyers and frigates. However, the Russia-Ukraine conflict exposed the strategic vulnerability of dependence on overseas suppliers, making it challenging to procure replacement engines, critical spare parts, and undertake major overhauls.

In response, the Indian Navy and Ministry of Defence are working in tandem to replace Ukrainian-origin marine propulsion systems with homegrown alternatives. At the heart of this effort is the development of high-power marine gas turbines, with Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited leading the charge in partnership with the Indian Navy, Defence Research and Development Organisation, and private industries. These indigenous engines are expected to strengthen domestic capabilities in high-temperature metallurgy, turbine blade manufacturing, and marine gearbox integration, reducing India's reliance on imported propulsion systems.

The programme also encompasses the development of medium-speed marine diesel engines, with Kirloskar Oil Engines Limited emerging as a key industry participant. By mastering these technologies, India aims to achieve complete propulsion sovereignty, enabling the country to tailor its propulsion systems to specific operational requirements without relying on export approvals or external supply chains. The initiative also holds the potential to benefit India's civilian maritime sector, including commercial shipbuilding and offshore energy industries, creating a broader industrial ecosystem around advanced marine propulsion.

One of the major lessons learned from dependence on overseas suppliers has been the challenge of maintaining complex propulsion systems throughout their operational lives. Traditionally, major overhauls of gas turbines often required specialised support from the original manufacturer, involving long turnaround times and dependence on foreign supply chains. To address this challenge, India is expanding its domestic Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) capabilities, enabling the country to maintain complex propulsion systems throughout their operational lives.

Local industrial partnerships involving organisations such as Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited and other defence manufacturers are increasingly focusing on turbine refurbishment, component manufacturing, reverse engineering of critical spare parts, and lifecycle support within India. These facilities are expected to reduce maintenance turnaround times while ensuring greater operational availability of frontline warships during periods of geopolitical uncertainty.

The localisation effort also aligns closely with the Government's broader Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, which seeks to increase indigenous content across major defence programmes. Marine propulsion has traditionally remained one of the most technologically challenging areas of naval engineering due to the demanding operating environment, stringent reliability requirements, and advanced materials involved.

Successfully mastering these technologies would significantly enhance India's strategic autonomy while strengthening the domestic industrial base supporting future naval programmes. The timing is particularly significant as the Indian Navy prepares for an ambitious fleet expansion over the coming decades, requiring reliable indigenous propulsion solutions capable of supporting sustained operations across the Indian Ocean Region.

Domestic production would also provide greater flexibility in tailoring propulsion systems to specific operational requirements without depending on export approvals or external supply chains. Beyond military applications, the technologies being developed under these programmes could also benefit India's civilian maritime sector, including commercial shipbuilding and offshore energy industries, creating a broader industrial ecosystem around advanced marine propulsion.

As India continues to accelerate its indigenous marine engine programme, the country is systematically reducing one of its most critical areas of strategic dependence. By mastering the technologies involved, India is poised to achieve complete propulsion sovereignty, enabling the country to tailor its propulsion systems to specific operational requirements without relying on export approvals or external supply chains. The journey towards self-reliance in marine propulsion is a significant step towards enhancing India's strategic autonomy and strengthening its domestic industrial base.
