The Indian Air Force has issued a Request for Information for a high-calibre sniper rifle chambered in 12.7x99mm, commonly known as .50 BMG, to equip its elite Garud commandos. This move reflects the growing need for long-range precision firepower in modern special operations, as the Garud commandos continue to play a crucial role in airbase security, counter-terrorism, and special operations tasks across India's diverse terrain.

A New Era of Long-Range Precision

The new rifle is designed to deliver a muzzle velocity of at least 850 meters per second and a muzzle energy of no less than 14,000 joules, with an effective engagement range of 1,800 meters and a maximum range of 2,500 meters. This places the weapon firmly in the anti-materiel category, alongside its conventional long-range sniping role. The rifle's barrel life has been specified at 15 years or 5,000 rounds, whichever comes first, and the barrel must be compatible with a sound suppressor while carrying a Military Standard-1913 Picatinny rail for mounting optics and accessories.

Manageability in the Field

Despite the size of the cartridge, the IAF wants a weapon that remains manageable in the field. The combined weight of the rifle, including bipod, empty magazine, telescopic sight, mounts, and flash suppressor or muzzle brake, has been capped at around 15 kilograms, with a tolerance of roughly 10 per cent. The overall length must not exceed 1,500 millimetres, reducing to no more than 1,250 millimetres when folded. The specification calls for an adjustable or folding buttstock, an adjustable cheek rest, a quick-release monopod system, and an ergonomic pistol grip.

The rifle must withstand shocks of up to 900G and carry a shelf life of at least 15 years, with environmental and durability testing benchmarked against JSG, JSS, or Military Standard-810 norms, including operation at altitudes up to 5,000 meters above sea level. The day sight must offer 5x to 45x magnification, at least 90 per cent light transmission, multi-coated lenses, and a first focal plane mil-grid reticle, alongside a stadiametric rangefinder covering 200 to 1,800 meters and a Bluetooth-enabled ballistic calculator with real-time correction display.

Enhancing Garud Commandos' Capabilities

The new .50 Calibre sniper rifle will add an anti-materiel and extreme-range capability to the Garud commandos, extending their reach against vehicles, radars, and fortified structures well beyond what the existing 7.62mm platform can engage. The Garud commandos currently rely on the Israeli-origin IMI Galil 7.62mm sniper rifle, also known as the Galatz, a semi-automatic weapon built on the Galil assault rifle platform and chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO. Alongside it, the force fields the IWI Tavor TAR-21, AK-103 rifles, IWI Negev light machine guns, and Glock-17 pistols, but the Galil remains its only dedicated sniper system.
