The Indian Navy is evaluating a range of next-generation airborne early warning (AEW) solutions, including High Altitude Long Endurance (HALE) unmanned aerial vehicles and electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) platforms, as it seeks to replace its ageing fleet of Russian-built Ka-31 Airborne Early Warning helicopters operating from aircraft carriers. The Ka-31 remains the Indian Navy’s only dedicated carrier-based airborne early warning platform. Equipped with a distinctive folding E-801M Oko airborne radar mounted beneath the fuselage, the helicopter significantly extends the radar horizon of carrier battle groups by detecting low-flying aircraft, cruise missiles and surface vessels well beyond the range of shipborne sensors. However, sustaining the relatively small Russian-built fleet has become increasingly challenging. Maintenance complexities, ageing airframes and long-term logistics support have prompted the Navy to begin evaluating alternative solutions that could offer greater availability and improved operational flexibility. The Navy has traditionally favoured larger airborne early warning aircraft because of their ability to carry more powerful radars, larger crews and greater endurance. However, conventional fixed-wing AEW aircraft require catapult-assisted launch systems and arrested recovery equipment, capabilities that are not available on India’s STOBAR aircraft carriers, INS Vikrant and INS Vikramaditya.
